Scrappers let early lead, win slip away



Argenis Reyes led Mahoning Valley with four hits.
AUBURN, N.Y. -- An early lead did not hold up as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost to the Auburn Doubledays 8-3 Monday at Falcon Park.
The Scrappers (21-23) seized a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the New York-Penn League game.
Argenis Reyes went 4-for-5 for the Scrappers, who were outhit 11-8.
The Scrappers lost seven straight games last week before taking their last two contests.
Reyes led off the game with a bunt single. Brett Parker singled to right, and a fielding error advanced both batters.
Wyatt Toregas singled to the shortstop, scoring Reyes with the first run of the game, but Mike Butia struck out.
Chris Gimenez followed and reached on an error that scored Parker and advanced Toregas to third.
Tim Montgomery made it a 3-0 game with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Toregas.
The Doubledays (32-9) scored twice in the last of the first, then tied the score at 3-all in the third frame.
The Doubledays took a 5-3 lead in the fourth with a two-run outburst.
Auburn added two more runs in the fifth and one more in the last of the eighth.
