Woman dies after accident on Route 19
HADLEY, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said an elderly Carlton, Pa., woman was fatally injured in a three-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 19 one mile north of here.
Esther Weaver, 82, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, William Weaver, 84.
Both were flown by helicopter from the scene of the 4:30 p.m. Saturday crash to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, where William Weaver was in serious condition today.
Mrs. Weaver died of her injuries at 8:25 p.m. Saturday, according to the Mahoning County coroner's office.
Police said the accident occurred when a northbound pickup truck on Route 19 driven by Robert Yeany, 44, of Hadley, went left of center into the southbound lane.
Weaver, who was southbound, tried to avoid the oncoming pickup and steered into the northbound lane, police said. However, Yeany corrected his line of travel and swerved back into the northbound lane, and the two vehicles collided, police said.
The impact caused Yeany's vehicle to overturn and it rolled into the southbound lanes, striking a southbound vehicle driven by Christi Ruffing, 33, of Greenville.
Ruffing wasn't injured but a passenger in her vehicle, Carolyn Ruffing, 11, of Greenville suffered minor injuries. She and Yeany were treated at UPMC Horizon in Greenville, police said.
Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt, police said.
