Officials hope rep's visit brings federal money
LEETONIA -- Village officials hope a visit from U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland of Portsmouth, D-6th, will bring federal dollars to the village.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said Strickland spent about 90 minutes Monday afternoon at village hall and in touring the Cherry Valley Coke Ovens park.
The former site of the Cherry Valley Iron and Coal Co. is an Ohio historical site. Village officials hope to find some federal grants to fund preservation efforts there.
Phillips said Strickland had made a stop at the park before, but Tuesday he toured the entire coke ovens site.
Phillips also asked Strickland to find federal dollars to help pay for replacement of aging waterlines throughout the village.
"I think it was a very productive visit, and we hope to get Representative Strickland back at another time to look at some other sites," Phillips said.
"His presence here can only be good for the village."
