The university needs to raise $10 million for the project.

PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel University and state officials announced that the school would take control of a state-owned armory and renovate it for a new convocation center and basketball arena.

The Philadelphia Armory, which is nearly surrounded by Drexel-owned building, is now used as the home base for the Pennsylvania National Guard's 103rd Engineering Battalion.

Under the agreement announced Thursday, Drexel would lease the building rent-free for three years. If the university raises $10 million to renovate the armory, a National Historic Landmark built in 1916, Drexel would sign a long-term lease and turn the building into a 5,000-seat arena, officials said.

The three-year lease also gives the National Guard group time to find a new home and gives Drexel, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, time to plan its renovation, university officials said.

The proposed arena would seat about twice fans as many as Drexel's current gym, the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Suspensions

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Six women basketball players at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo were suspended for their conference tournament for what the school said was a violation of a no-alcohol rule.

They broke a team rule by drinking at an off-campus birthday party for a player last weekend, the team said.

Cal Poly lost 76-62 to Long Beach State on Wednesday in the first round of the Big West Conference tournament, leaving the school with a 10-17 record.

There will be no further penalty against the players, school spokesman Brian Thurmond said Thursday.
