St. Louis women win upset over No. 25-ranked DePaul
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Harmonie King drove along the baseline and hit a layup with 7 seconds remaining, lifting Saint Louis to a 73-71 overtime victory over No. 25 DePaul on Friday night.
Angie Lewis scored a game-high 23 points for Saint Louis (11-8, 2-2 Conference USA) while Star Jackson chipped in 11 points and King added 10.
Charlene Smith led DePaul (14-5, 3-1) with 19 points and Jenni Dant added 14 points. Smith missed the final shot of the game. Khara Smith hit a putback but officials ruled the buzzer had sounded.
Saint Louis has won three of its last four meetings with DePaul but DePaul still leads the series 20-6.
DePaul grabbed the lead just over three minutes into the game and held it until Jackson made two free throws with 15 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 61 and send it into overtime.
Lewis hit a layup 35 seconds into overtime, giving Saint Louis a 63-61. After a DePaul free throw by Smith, Jackson scored, giving Saint Louis a 65-62 lead. DePaul tied it at 65 on a 3-pointer by Laura Sobieszczyk. Lewis put Saint Louis back ahead but Sobieszczyk tied it at 67 with a jumper.
A bucket by Lewis gave Saint Louis another two-point lead. Charlene Smith scored for DePaul to tie it with 1:42 remaining. The teams traded baskets as Lewis scored for Saint Louis and Charlene Smith then scored for DePaul with 14 seconds left. That set up King's winning basket.
Saint Louis outrebounded DePaul 43-32 and shot 49 percent to DePaul's 40 percent. DePaul led 30-25 at halftime.
