SHARON Race is on to taste as much as you can
The charity event has tripled in size in recent years, a race organizer said.
SHARON, Pa. -- As many as 700 people will brave the wintry weather to take part in this year's Frostbite Foodtaste Footrace along downtown city streets.
This year's race begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at the ACT (Another Corner Tavern) bar at Sharpsville Avenue and Fisher Hill Street.
"It's tripled in size over the last several years," said Trisha Knight, spokesman for Best Wings USA, the originator and annual sponsor of the event.
Knight said there were only about 280 participants when she got involved in the project several years ago, but the race drew 600 people last year. About 700 are expected to show up this year, she said.
Participants pay a $10 entry fee to visit 11 Sharon establishments to "taste" specialty food items and beverages at those locations.
All registered participants will get a souvenir hat and T-shirt.
They must travel on foot from designated stop to designated stop which are spread out from Sharon's north side to just south of the downtown business district.
There will be awards for first-, second-, third- and dead-last-place finishers in both the male and female categories, but few participants make it a serious race, Knight said.
Awards will be presented at 10:30 p.m. at the Hot Rod Cafe at Connelly Boulevard and Chestnut Street.
"It's all for charity, just for fun," she said, explaining that few people actually race. Some just walk the route, taking their time, she said.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Help Heat Homes program run by the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell.
Pepsi, Bailey's, Anchor Foods and Coors Light are co-sponsors of this year's race.
Participants can pick up an entry form at any of the participating establishments, or they can register between 4 and 6 p.m. on race day at Quaker Steak & amp; Lube at Connelly Boulevard and Chestnut Avenue or at ACT immediately before the race.
