Coaching change

Rob Hawthorne has been named coach of the Mahoning Valley Phantom Rockets ice hockey team, replacing his father, Bob Hawthorne, who left the team to pursue other interests. Rob Hawthorne was an assistant coach this year. The Phantom Rockets (13-29-0) have won four of their past six games. They play host to the Toledo Ice Diggers Sunday at 7 p.m.

Storm shuts downevents in East

A winter storm dumped up to 4 feet of snow on the Northeast and wreaked havoc on the sports schedule throughout the region. The Big East saw its men's basketball schedule wiped out Monday by the President's Day storm that was the worst to hit the mid-Atlantic and central Appalachian states in seven years. The game between No. 9 Pittsburgh and Georgetown was rescheduled for tonight, and a Washington Wizards game against the Toronto Raptors on Michael Jordan's 40th birthday was postponed until March 4.

Tyson fight off

Mike Tyson's fight with Clifford Etienne was called off Monday, following a week of erratic behavior that once again raised questions about the boxing future of the 36-year-old former heavyweight champion. C5.

Shaq questionable

Shaq-Yao II might not come off as scheduled. Los Angeles Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal is listed as questionable for tonight's game against Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets at Staples Center because of a sore left knee. O'Neal sat out Sunday night's 117-110 loss to the New York Knicks and didn't practice Monday. He is also bothered by soreness in his right big toe.

Woods, Els get top two seedings at Match Play

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are the top two seeded golfers for The Accenture Match Play Championship, which starts Feb. 26 at La Costa. It will mark the first time Els and Woods have played in the same tournament since the Tour Championship. Phil Mickelson (No. 3) and Vijay Singh (No. 4) are seeded first in the other two brackets.
