BOARDMAN -- With two goals from Phil Colucci and two assists from Jake Secich, the Mooney/Ursuline club team defeated Boardman 4-2 Sunday in the Northeast Ohio High School Hockey Association President's Day Tournament at The Ice Zone.
"The intensity just wasn't there for a variety of reasons," said Alan Miller, Mooney/Ursuline coach. "A couple of our players were missing, causing us to shift our players around to compensate for their absence.
"Phil Colucci and Luke Johnston, usually offensive players, were shifted to defense and while it helps you in one area, you suffer in another and that happened to us tonight," Miller said.
The win was the third in as many tries for Mooney/Ursuline (10-7-3) this season over the Spartans. Boardman (8-20-2) has split their last four contests.
"We came out with intensity, then backed off," Spartan coach Matt Pusateri said. "I blame myself for that.
"When we scored the first goal of the game, I backed off and looking back I should not have done that," Pusateri said. "Our second line of Jason Iorio, Tristan Lysowski and Arman Olgun really came through for us tonight."
Olgun got Boardman on the board first when Iorio assisted on the first of his two goals at 7:22 of the opening period to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
When Secich found Colucci for the first of his two goals (and the first of four unanswered by M/U) with 1:13 remaining in the opening period, Mooney/Ursuline knotted the game heading into the second period of play.
"This program is five years old and most of the team has been around during that time," Miller said. "Secich, Colucci and Johnston play together for the Lawrence County AA Major squad and they know each other very well. We were lucky to get a win here tonight."
When Secich assisted on Steve Graziani's power play goal at 12:38 of the second period, Mooney/Ursuline took a 2-1 lead, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Graziani assisted on Joey D'Amato's goal at the 10:50 mark, giving M/U a 3-1 lead heading into the final period of play.
Colucci's unassisted goal just 33 seconds into the final period made it 4-1 in favor of Mooney/Ursuline.
Olgun's second goal of the game at the 8:07 mark of the final stanza cut the M/U lead in half at 4-2, the closest they could get the rest of the way.
The Spartans outshot Mooney/Ursuline, 30-21.
M/U goalie Anthony Sabatka rejecting 19 Boardman attempts while the Spartans' John Yuhaniak made 26 saves.
