Authorities change charges in rape case

FARRELL, Pa. -- Authorities dropped charges of rape and indecent exposure against Kirk D. White, 30, of Ormond Avenue, Sharon, but replaced them with attempted rape and other crimes.
White is accused of assaulting a 15-year-old girl while she slept Feb. 1 at a home in the 100 block of Fruit Avenue.
William Moder, assistant Mercer County district attorney, said the counts were dropped because the victim remembers nothing and the only witness to the assault didn't witness any sexual intercourse, nor was White exposed.
The witness said she found White atop the girl in a bedroom but he was still wearing boxer shorts.
Moder said White is charged with attempted rape, attempted statutory sexual assault, attempted aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault and remains in county jail with bond set at $50,000.
The rape count could be reinstated if tests indicate that crime occurred, Moder said.
