Teach-in on Palestine
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Student Peace Action Network will have a teach-in on Palestine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in Peaberry's Cafe at Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.
Among topics discussed will be pollution and water issues, U.N. resolutions and the Geneva Accords.
OhioReads open house
YOUNGSTOWN -- State Rep. Sylvester Patton and state Sen. Robert Hagan are expected at an open house for OhioReads Seniors Teaching and Reaching Students from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Williamson Elementary School, 58 Williamson Ave.
The open house will highlight the impact the program has had on pupils, adult volunteers and the community. Volunteers, teachers, principals and community members will attend.
Ryan announces grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, announced that a $500,000 grant was awarded this week to Youngstown State University's College of Engineering and Technology.
The grant, part of the 2003 Omnibus Appropriations Act, will be used to redevelop a materials engineering science program at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with special emphasis on steel and foam materials and structures.
The bill also includes grants of $50,000 for lighting improvements on the Walton Street bridge.
