MEADVILLE, Pa. -- "Confronting Consumption" attracted the attention of scholars, environmental activists and everyday consumers when it was published last summer. The book, co-edited and co-authored by Michael Maniates, associated professor of political science and environmental science at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., refutes the myth that consumption is a symbol of progress and advocates thoughtful changes in levels of consumption. The book was recently named by the International Studies Association (ISA) as 2002's best book on international environmental affairs. "Confronting Consumption" received the ISA's annual Harold and Margaret Sprout Award, which is the highest award in the field of global environmental problem-solving and assessment.
