Group adds kids to list for drive

YOUNGSTOWN -- Give the Children a Chance, a nonprofit organization sponsoring a blanket drive for needy families, has added 1,600 children to the list of recipients hoping to receive blankets.
The 3-to-5-year-olds are enrolled in Head Start in Mahoning County and will visit the downtown headquarters of Give the Children a Chance to receive their blankets when it is convenient for their parents to bring them, said Kathryn Hawks Haney, the organization's founder. About 15 Head Start children have received their blankets, Haney added.
Blankets to be donated may be dropped off at the organization's headquarters in the Phar-Mor Centre. Haney said at least 5,000 blankets are needed; thus far, 700 blankets have been collected.
Give the Children a Chance also is distributing blankets to senior citizens. Blanket distributions will continue throughout the winter until the need is met or the blankets are gone.
Distributions are open to needy families with children, and senior citizens in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties and anyone else in need. For more information, call (330) 747-2273.
