PREP SWIMMING Spartans' O'Halloran sets sectional marks

He broke two records and helped Boardman to a fifth-place finish in the meet.

AKRON -- Boardman senior Tyler O'Halloran broke sectional records in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, and also qualified for next weekend's district meet in two relays to lead Boardman to a fifth-place finish at the boys swimming sectional Saturday at the University of Akron's Ocaseck Natatorium.

O'Halloran broke his own sectional record of 20.11 in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.89. His 100 freestyle time of 46.02 broke Jon Albrecht's (Akron Firestone) record time of 46.69.

Neither was a personal best for O'Halloran.

The Spartans' 200 medley relay team of Lee Knight, O'Halloran, Brian Katz and Grant Brown finished second with a time of 1:42.21.

Boardman's 400 freestyle relay (Katz, Brown, Knight, O'Halloran) took second with a time of 3:21.99.

The top three individuals and top two relay teams in each event automatically advance to the district meet at Cleveland State University. In addition, 35 at-large qualifiers and 20 at-large relay teams advance.

Canfield senior Nick Frankle set school records in the 500 freestyle (first place, 4:53.10) and 100 breastroke (third place, 1:00.77) and helped lead the Cardinals 200 freestyle relay team to a second place finish.

Perry sectional

PERRY -- Warren Harding senior Nathan King won the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM, and helped lead the Raiders to victories in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays at Saturday's boys sectional at Perry High School.

Sophomore Tyler King placed third in the 100 butterfly. The 400 freestyle relay includes Todd Talstein, Tyler King, Eric Esposito and Nathan King. The 200 freestyle relay includes Eddie Angelo, Tyler King, Esposito and Nathan King.

McDonald junior Jon Tepsick placed third in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Harding junior Todd Schlaegel placed second in 1-meter diving.

GirlsDivision I

AKRON -- Canfield senior Meghan Linnelli won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events at Saturday's Division I girls sectional in Akron.

Junior Cubbey Linnelli finished third in the 100 butterfly. Boardman sophomore Hayley Robinson took second in the 100 breastroke.

At Perry, Howland sophomore Heather Gilmour won the 200 and 500 freestyle and her sister, freshman Erin Gilmour, placed second in the 200 freestyle at Saturday's Div. I sectional meet at Perry.

Howland's 200 medley relay placed third and the 200 freestyle relay placed second.

Mann, a freshman, won the 100 butterfly and Ditchey, a junior, placed second in the 100 backstroke.

In Div. II, Poland senior Carey Venglarcik placed second in the 100 backstroke to advance to the district.
