VETERANS

Post 2074 elections

Allen D. Johnson was elected commander of VFW Post 2074 for 2003. Other officers are: James Kachelries, senior vice commander; Charles Knight, junior vice commander; Jack Hoon, adjutant; Gay Krok, quartermaster; and Manuel Gonsalves, Steve Novak and William Pattison, trustees.

PROMOTIONS

Commander in Navy

Patrick Owen Shea, son of Sally L. Shea of Youngstown, and the late Paul E. Shea, has been promoted to commander in the Navy and is serving as a personal assistant to the commander of the Second Fleet in Norfolk, Va. He previously was executive officer aboard the USS Ramage.

Shea is a 1983 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a 1987 graduate of the Naval Academy. He lives in Virginia City, Va., with his wife, Carole, and their sons, Timothy and Owen.

Marine Corps corporal

Marine Corps Cpl. Adam C. Hrvatin was promoted to his present rank while assigned with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Nassau as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Hrvatin is a son of Larry and Alexa Hrvatin of Poland and grandson of Fayson and Jean Miller of Salem.

ENDURING FREEDOM

In harm's way

Several area residents are serving in the military as part of Enduring Freedom. They include:

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael J. Elbert, son of Sheryl D. Elbert of Steubenville and Donald C. Elbert Jr. of Tiltonsville, Ohio, assigned to Destroyer Squadron 31 aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Navy Lt. Charles E. Crane, whose wife, Mary, is the daughter of Margret B. Ewing of Sharpsville, Pa., assigned to Destroyer Squadron 31 aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Marine Corps Cpl. Joshua A. Balko, son of Cathy and Jack Balko of Girard, assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., deployed aboard ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group.

Navy Lt. j.g. Lon Prater, whose wife, Angie, is the daughter of Keith Clark of Masury, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, Va., in support of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class George M. Lingenfelter, son of Kathy L. Lingenfelter of Austintown, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau. He is a 1999 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
