Both men are being held without monetary bond.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Authorities are saying a drug deal gone bad led to the death of a Chartes Street man last week.
Police arrested and charged two men Tuesday in the death of Russell McKee, 39, who died Friday at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh while in surgery for gunshot wounds.
Telly Armstrong, 30, of East Long Avenue, Apt. 2, is charged with criminal homicide, criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, carrying a firearm without a license and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Police arrested him Tuesday afternoon at his home.
Ben Frank Jones III, 23, of Pennsylvania Avenue is charged with criminal conspiracy to commit homicide, robbery and carrying a firearm without a license. He was arrested at the Lawrence County Jail on Tuesday where he was being held on unrelated charges.
Police said McKee was shot in the leg and abdomen at about 12:30 a.m. Jan. 31 on Hamilton and Lyndall streets.
According to court documents, Armstrong and Jones were walking on Hamilton Street when McKee pulled up and asked to buy drugs from the men.
Witnesses told police that Armstrong and Jones demanded McKee produce money before they would give him the drugs and he refused. Court papers said an argument ensued and Armstrong and Jones hit McKee several times in the face while demanding money.
They took money from the victim as Armstrong fired two shots from a handgun, court papers said.
Witnesses told police that Armstrong and Jones ran to Armstrong's apartment and Armstrong told people there he had just killed someone and tried to hide the gun. The documents said that Jones then disposed of the handgun.
Both were being held in the Lawrence County Jail this morning without bond. A preliminary hearing is expected to be held sometime next week.
