Loew gets sanction for Golden Gloves

YOUNGSTOWN -- Southside Boxing Club trainer Jack Loew received a proper sanction from Clyde Dunn of the Cleveland Boxing Association and the Lake Erie AAU to hold the Golden Gloves tournament in Youngstown.
The first night will be April 26, with the finals set for May 3 at Krakusy Hall, 2205 South Ave.
The Golden Gloves, initiated by Tom Carney during the depression era and carried on by the late Tony Vivo, has been absent from the local amateur boxing scene for nearly a decade, but Loew has worked hard to bring this event back.
"I promised earlier this year that I would attempt to have a local Golden Gloves again, and if this goes well, we can grow in the great tradition of the past, to a three- and four-week tournament," Loew said.
Along with local clubs such as P.C. Torres and the Warren Boxing Club, Frank West and the Buckeye Elks, The Downtown Boxing Club and the Southside Boxing Club, Loew will have teams from Akron, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and West Virginia competing.
Anyone interested in being a sponsor for the tournament can contact Loew at (330) 788-7592.
