Softball

CANFIELD -- Youngstown State tied a school record for the most wins in a season -- 29 -- by sweeping a doubleheader from Toledo 6-0, 7-1, Thursday.

Freshman Kelly Murphy and senior Steph Hartman combined for a two-hitter in the opener for the Penguins (29-12-1).

Freshman Liz Holt broke the single-season home run record with her ninth homer in the second inning.

In the nightcap sophomore Ashley Lockmiller threw a two-hitter with five strikeouts to gain her fourth win.

Char Kudlock went 2-for-3 in each game with a home run.

The Penguins play host to UW-Green Bay in a Horizon League doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at McCune Park.

Men's basketball

YOUNGSTOWN -- Coach John Robic signed Dwight Holmes, a 6-foot-6 forward from Reynoldsburg, to a national letter of intent.

Holmes, who attends Reynoldsburg High School, averaged 17.5 points and nine rebounds per game as a senior. He was named to the PrepSpotlight.com second-team Division I All-Ohio team. He was ranked the 21st best senior in the state and the fifth-best wing forward by PrepSpotlight.com.

As a junior he attended Stebbins High School in Dayton where he averaged 22.7 ponts and 9.8 rebounds and was third-team All-Southwest Ohio.

Holmes is the fourth recruit for Robic, joining point guard Mike Woodard of Fairburn, Ga., forward Craig Anderson of Mt. Prospect, Ill., and forward John Barber of Renaissance High of Detroit.

Golf

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Senior Nicole Hamstreet was named Horizon League women's golf athlete of the week.

Hamstreet took first place at the Cleveland State Invitational with a two-round total of 160 (79-81) to help lead the Penguins to a first-place finish.

LOCAL

Gloves schedule

YOUNGSTOWN -- Southside Boxing Club trainer Jack Loew has set the schedule for the first night of the Youngstown Golden Gloves tournament Saturday at Krakusy Hall.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first bell scheduled for 7.

There will be six sub-novice bouts. The opener will have 85-pound Junior Olympians Juan Salinas from the Southside Boxing Club against Tim Matthews from Toledo. Next, Southside Boxing's Charlie Fagan takes on Alexander Wright from Cleveland in a battle of 119-pounders.

Louis Vaughn from Wooster and Willie Harris from Cleveland fight in a 142-pound bout and there are two 152-pound bouts -- Carl Cole from Wooster against Trell Tausha from Cleveland, and Abraham Omaiz from Cleveland fighting Austintown's Mike Sackela.

Sackela, 4-1, fights for the West Buckeye Elks and is trained by John Hobart.

Rafael Saavedroc and Louis Cotlo, both from Cleveland, will be in a super-heavyweight sub novice battle.

A pair of novice 132-pound bouts will feature Southside Boxing's Lou Zamudio and Chris Hazimahalis. Zamudio, from Poland, will battle Felix Colon from Cleveland, and Hazimahalis, from Campbell, will meet Steve Perry, a Mineral Ridge High sophomore who trains at the Downtown Boxing Club.

In a heavyweight novice bout, Norman Mills from Cleveland will fight Mike Goltiewicz from Toledo.

Three open fights have local fighters meeting Cleveland boxers.

In a 152-pound bout, Southside Boxing veteran Billy Lyell will be in a four-rounder against another hard fighting veteran from Cleveland, Delaney Howard.

Two 165-pound bouts will culminate the card. Rashen Wright from Cleveland will fight Darnell Boone from the Southside Boxing Club in one four rounder, and Anthony Pietrantonio from the West Buckeye Elks takes on Ronnie Johnson from Cleveland in the other four-rounder.
