Polka dots are connected to playful spring patterns

Published: Fri, April 25, 2003 @ 12:00 a.m.

WASHINGTON POST
Are you seeing spots? So is everyone else. They are everywhere -- spreading from purses to dog collars, dresses to bathing suits, raincoats to wrapping paper.
The polka dot is back.
They can be bold. "Polka dots are a fun, optimistic pattern reminiscent of the good times of the '50s," says Crate & amp; Barrel's Bette Kahn. The home furnishings store has revived a mod Marimekko pattern from 1956 for shower curtains, bed linens, coasters and butterfly chairs.
They can be frolicsome. "Polka dots are playful and whimsical," says Nordstrom's Gregg Andrews, whose selection of dots include a Lulu Guinness paper-doll-style purse.
They can be glamorous. "It's retro styling with a modern twist," says the Limited's Kiersten Geiger of the retailer's Audrey Hepburn-esque strapless number. "The polka dot print plays into this as one of the -- it's the combination of a retro print gloriously reinterpreted into modern fashion that makes it so fresh."
Just be ready to be spotted.
