The prayer: "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you: Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen."
History: The Ave Maria, Latin for Hail Mary, is composed of two parts. The first part is taken from the Gospels and joins the words of the Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation (Luke 1:28) with Elizabeth's greeting to the Virgin Mary at the Visitation (Luke 1:42). The joining of the verses dates to the fifth century in the Eastern liturgies. The second line, the second intercessory part, can be traced to the 15th century.
