Grant-writing seminar

LIBERTY -- A half-day grant-writing seminar will be offered Sept. 26 at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex. The seminar will be conducted by Susan L. Golden, a fund-raising consultant and best-selling author of "Secrets of Successful Grantsmanship: A Guerrilla Guide to Raising Money."

Registration begins at 8 a.m. for the seminar, which is sponsored by the Mahoning-Shenango Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Fees are $40 for AFP members, $50 for nonmembers. For more information, call Gloria Cagigas at (724) 946-7368.

Bids for prison work

YOUNGSTOWN -- State officials are seeking bids for construction of new outdoor recreation facilities at the Ohio State Penitentiary on Coitsville-Hubbard Road. The facilities are being upgraded because of a lawsuit filed last year by the American Civil Liberties Union, which said conditions of the recreation facilities at the supermaximum-security prison violate inmates' constitutional rights. Bids are being sought by the Ohio Department of Administrative Services through Oct. 9.

Woman sues company

YOUNGSTOWN -- A city woman has sued a Canton company that she says made her sick when it sprayed pesticide at the building where she once worked. Pennie Klein of North Kimberly Avenue filed the suit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court against Aid Pest Control of Canton and several chemical companies. The suit says Klein became seriously ill and had to be hospitalized after pesticide was sprayed at the FedEx Express office in Akron, where she worked in September 2000. She is seeking at least $25,000 in damages.

Meeting change

VIENNA -- The Mathews school board meeting set for Wednesday has been changed to Sept. 30. The meeting will be in the board office, Warren-Sharon Road, beginning at 6 p.m. with an executive session to discuss employment and compensation of public employees. Agenda items will be addressed beginning at about 6:30 p.m.

Safe driving program

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The AAA Seniors for Safe Driving program will be offered this month and in October in the Shenango Valley. No driving is required.

The first course is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 24-25 at Jason Black Chevrolet in Sharpsville. There will be a class from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 at Sharon Regional Health System's Hermitage Healthplace on Highland Road and another from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 8 and 9 at Mel Grata Chevrolet on East State Street.

The fee is $12, and drivers older than 55 who complete the course receive a discount of at least 5 percent on their auto insurance in Pennsylvania. To register, call (800) 559-4880.

Springfield trustees

NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township trustees will have a special meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday in the township building to discuss, among other issues, rescue truck bids and office equipment purchases for the township building.

Seeking owner of safe

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- State police are looking for the owner of a large safe found Friday in the state game lands on Mason Road in Plain Grove Township. They think it may have been taken during a burglary. Anyone missing a safe can contact state police at (724) 598-2211.

Restaurant fire

AUSTINTOWN -- Fire officials think an electrical problem in a neon sign sparked a fire at Antonio's restaurant Sunday afternoon. The front facade of the business at Raccoon and Pembrook roads was damaged, but there was minimal damage to the interior, fire officials said. There were no injuries.
