Area businesses are organizing Heart Walk teams, which are usually groups of 10.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Local American Heart Walks are Sept. 21 at Boardman Park for Mahoning and Columbiana counties, and Cafaro Field in Niles for Trumbull County, with registration at 8 a.m.
People of all ages may participate, either as individuals or in groups. There are no entry fees, but walkers are encouraged to ask family, friends, co-workers and neighbors for flat donations. The local campaign goal is $120,000.
The walk lasts about two hours, and walkers may walk as much or as little as they want, said local walk director, Lynn Whetson.
Area businesses are promoting employee health and wellness by organizing company-walking teams, which are usually groups of 10, but can be larger or smaller, Whetson said.
Heart disease and stroke survivors who participate will be honored with special red caps to show that they're fighting back against these deadly diseases, she said.
The theme of the Heart Walk is "Who will you walk for?" The national goal is to raise $75 million for cardiovascular disease and stroke research, as well as community and professional educational programs.
