YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications for the Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley Class of 2003 are available through October to high school sophomores with leadership potential.
The program provides opportunities for students to learn about the major systems in the Mahoning Valley and to develop effective working relationships with its leaders.
Participants complete a six-month program that includes a two-day opening retreat in December and six, monthly daylong sessions that focus on issues of concern to the community, including health care, social services, education, heritage of the Valley, media, the arts, business opportunities, government and criminal justice, and quality of life. The program concludes with a graduation dinner in May.
A $175 tuition covers program costs. Partial tuition assistance is available based on need. Applications may be requested by calling (330) 742-6716.
Relay for Life reps
CANFIELD -- The American Cancer Society has announced Relay for Life community ambassadors from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties who will act as spokesmen for the ACS' advocacy efforts. They will represent the interests of people touched by cancer before the U.S. Congress during a national event in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 18 and 19 for the Relay for Life Celebration on the Hill.
Local ambassadors are: Trumbull -- Bob Antenucci, Sharon Bayus, Brenda Boucher, Dr. Robert Brodell, Julie Brodell, Denise Caraway, Mark Massucci, Daniel Nagy, Susan Pappada and Donna Shaw; Mahoning -- Ed Brannan and Kimberly DeOnofrio; and Columbiana -- EyleenHimes and LaDawn Whitman.
HIV health-care panel
CANFIELD -- The Ryan White Consortium, a planning body for HIV health care and support services consisting of members from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Jefferson counties, will meet from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ursuline Center, 4250 Shields Road. Stand Down committee
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 2002 Stand Down committee will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Salvation Army, 1511 Glenwood Ave. The Stand Down, which is Nov. 7, is an event designed to assist economically disadvantaged and homeless individuals in Trumbull and Mahoning counties who need social services, food and clothing.
