MAHONING VALLEY Two die in accidents in Niles and Austintown
Occupants of other vehicles were not injured.
An elderly man and woman died of injuries they suffered in separate accidents Friday afternoon in Niles and Austintown.
An 85-year-old man died after a four-vehicle accident at U.S. Route 422 and Niles-Vienna Road in Niles.
Vern Remalia of Canfield Road, Youngstown, died at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. The accident happened at 1:34 p.m.
Police said he was a passenger in a car driven by his wife, Elizabeth, 83, who remains in satisfactory condition at TMH. Nobody in the other three vehicles was injured.
The Remalias were westbound on Route 422 and tried to turn left onto Niles-Vienna Road, when their car was broadsided by an eastbound station wagon on the passenger side, from which firefighters had to extricate Vern Remalia. The impact pushed the Remalia car into two stopped cars.
An 85-year-old woman died in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown of injuries from a two-vehicle accident on Mahoning Avenue just west of Raccoon Road in Austintown at 3 p.m., the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Rita C. Sellers, of Lancaster Drive, Youngstown, was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Edward L., 81, who was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. The other driver, Robert G. Bender, 19, of South Raccoon Road, was not injured.
Bender's van was westbound on Mahoning Avenue, while the Sellers were stopped at Mahoning Avenue and a private drive. The van hit the Sellers' car as they attempted to cross Mahoning Avenue into another private drive.
