Two days to decide

Published: Tue, September 3, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers beat Jamestown 11-4 Monday to remained tied for the Pinckney Division lead.
NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers remain tied for first place in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division after an 11-4 rout of the Jamestown Jammers Monday before 4,824 at Cafaro Field.
The Scrappers (45-29) and Auburn Doubledays have identical records with just two days remaining in the regular season. Auburn defeated the Batavia Muckdogs 1-0 on Monday.
Mahoning Valley will conclude the regular season with home games tonight and Wednesday against Jamestown, while the Doubledays finish up at home tonight against the Muckdogs, then travel to Batavia for the season finale on Wednesday.
The team that loses the Pinckney Division race could also very likely find itself out of the playoffs altogether.
In the McNamara Division, Staten Island is in first place with a 47-25 record, while Williamsport (47-27) is in second place, two full games ahead of both the Scrappers and Auburn.
Who will qualify
The three division winners and the second-place team with the best record qualify for the playoffs. If the Scrappers and Auburn finish the regular season in a tie, there will be a one-game playoff Thursday to determine the division champion.
A seven-run third inning by the Scrappers and three more in the fifth put Monday's game out of reach.
In the third, Andy Baxter, Pat Osborn and Ricardo Rojas all drove in a pair of runs in the inning. Baxter finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
With one out, Ben Francisco started the rally with a double. After Einar Diaz's groundout, a walk and hit batter loaded the bases. Baxter then singled to right, scoring two runs, and Shaun Larkin followed with a RBI single. Osborn's double scored two more runs, then, following a walk, Rojas tripled home the final two runs.
Blake Allen (5-5) worked six solid innings, allowed just two earned runs on five hits, with one walk and one strikeout to pick up the win.
Diaz, on a rehab assignment with the Scrappers, went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Diaz is working back from a hand injury suffered on Aug. 22 in a game against the Oakland Athletics.
The Jammers' Jimmy DeMontel (2-6) lasted just 42/3 innings and the Scrappers collected seven hits and 10 runs off his unimpressive outing.
