Brad Smith excitesMissouri fans

When Chaney High's Brad Smith stepped under center on Saturday as the first freshman quarterback to start a season opener at Missouri, no one really knew what to expect. No one had a right to expect what Smith delivered in leading the Tigers to a 33-20 victory over reigning Big Ten champion Illinois. The win is perhaps Missouri's most significant victory in football since a double-overtime win over then-No. 12 Oklahoma State in 1997. Page C3.

Coach fired

Former Youngstown Hawks coach Johnny Neumann, who led the NCAA in scoring in 1970-71 and played in the NBA and ABA, was fired as coach of Lebanon's national team for criticizing the country's government after the first round of the World Championships. More, Page C6.

Aeros beat Erie

Jason Fitzgerald and Scott Pratt homered, and Kyle Denney pitched five scoreless innings as the Akron Aeros finished the regular season by beating the Erie SeaWolves 9-3 on Sunday. The Eastern League's South Division playoffs begin Wednesday with the Aeros playing Harrisburg. Fitzgerald's 11th homer of the season, a two-run shot to right field in the third inning, came off Jeremy Johnson (6-1).
