Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. Volunteer help is needed for these agencies:
American Red Cross (Blood services): People immediately needed to assist with blood donor registration drive. Orientation and training provided.
Area Agency on Aging, District XI: People needed to visit residents in nursing facilities, act as an advocate for residents rights, educate residents and families about their rights and assist in resolving complaints as part of the district's long-term care ombudsman program. Ten hours of training, a background check, and a commitment of four hours per month required.
Easter Seals of Mahoning County: Volunteers needed for children's day-care and classroom activities, clerical assistance and maintenance. A background check and a physical examination are required.
Grace Place Medical Services: People needed during weekday hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to greet people coming to the medical center, keep the center neat, collect vouchers for center items and offer Grace Place fliers and literature to people leaving the center. Volunteers need to be at least 18 and must sign a confidentiality statement.
Hope House: Volunteers needed to provide clerical support, monitor supervised visits and provide light cleaning services. Those interested must undergo a background check and sign a confidentiality statement.
Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley: People needed to assist with the mission's "Ride for Rescue" event Oct. 5 to benefit the homeless. Activities are registration, food preparation and serving, monitoring bike trails and helping with games and cleanup.
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program: People 55 and older are asked to use their life experiences to assist others in the community. Volunteers receive assistance with volunteer placement, supplemental insurance and recognition benefits.
Volunteer Service to Seniors: Volunteers immediately needed to serve as one-on-one companions to elderly citizens living alone and having difficulty meeting their daily living needs. Activities include visits, weekly shopping and transportation to hairdresser and doctor's appointments. A background check is required.
Youngstown City Schools: Older adults are needed to tutor and mentor students in kindergarten through fourth-grade in neighborhood schools as part of the district's Seniors Teaching and Reaching Students program.
