CROSS COUNTRY No shock: Maplewood, McDonald finish 1-2
CORTLAND -- Maplewood claimed the top four individual spots at Saturday's Maplewood Invitational to easily outdistance McDonald for the team title.
Derek Armstrong finished first overall with a time of 16:51, followed by John Palmer, Paul Moser and Luke Bottorff. Maplewood placed second at the state meet last year in Division III.
Joe Kunkel took sixth to lead McDonald, which won last year's Div. III state title.
Jen Wenhold, a state qualifier in both track and cross country last season, won the girls race with a time of 20:23 to lead first place McDonald, which is expected to contend for the Div. III state title. Wenhold's sister, Jess, placed sixth.

NORTH CANTON -- Matt Jones finished 37th to lead Boardman to an eighth place finish out of 14 teams in Div. I at Saturday's Dave Clegg Invitational at Hoover High.
The meet is named after Hoover's legendary coach, who passed away last spring. In Div. II, South Range's Doug Miller placed sixth with a time of 17:56 to lead the Raiders to a second place finish out of 16 teams.
In the girls race, Boardman junior Brittany Durkin placed sixth with a time of 20:33 to lead the Spartans to a fifth place finish in Div. I. Deirda Clary finished 23rd to lead Salem to an eighth place finish. Andra Sanders placed first and Sarah Wingert took second out of 130 runners for South Range in the open race.
Hornet Harrier Inv.
HICKORY -- Reynolds' Jake Habel ran a 17:52 to finish first at Saturday's Hornet Harrier Inv. at Delahunty Middle School. Lakeview's Brad Beggs placed second as the Bulldogs claimed the boys team title.
In the girls race, Sharpsville's Sarah Gill placed first with a time of 21:09. Megan Feerolf placed seventh to lead Rocky Grove to the team title.
