FARRELL Hospital has new president

Revenue last year for UPMC Horizon reached $3.6 million.

FARRELL, Pa. -- Dean W. Eckenrode has been named president and chief executive officer of UPMC Horizon, succeeding J. Larry Heinike, who has taken the post of senior vice president of UPMC Health System's Hospital Division.

UPMC Horizon is a member hospital in UPMC Health System.

Biography

Eckenrode's appointment, announced Thursday, is effective immediately. He previously served as senior vice president of the Insurance Services Division and Regional Network of UPMC Health System.

He has a bachelor's degree in education from California University of Pennsylvania and did postgraduate work in Health Plan Management at the University of Michigan.

He studied accounting and finance at Robert Morris College and completed executive training at Duke University.

He spent 27 years at Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania before joining UPMC.

He has served as board vice chairman of the UPMC Health Plan, board secretary and treasurer of Community Care Behavioral Health, board member of the Salvation Army and a member of seven hospital boards within the UPMC Health System, including UPMC Horizon.

Eckenrode will have offices at both the Farrell and Greenville hospitals of UPMC Horizon, and he and his wife, Deb, plan to have a local residence as well as their home in Pittsburgh's North Hills.

Other business

Besides selecting a new CEO at the meeting this week, the trustees also got an update on the 2001 operations, including:

UA report that total income was $3.6 million, $1 million more than was budgeted.

U The opening of the Womancare Center in Hermitage in July in conjunction with Magee Womens Hospital.

U The merger of the Horizon Home Care program with the UPMC Health System/South Hills Health System Home Care program.

U The opening of a mobile positron emission tomography service at both hospitals.

U Creation of a hospital-based pain management program.

U The completion of both the Shenango Imaging project at the Farrell hospital and the Greenville Ambulatory Surgery project at the Greenville facility.

U Establishment of a contract with University of Pittsburgh Physicians for professional radiation oncology services at LifeCare Cancer Center.
