Brookfield cop is suspect in break-in

Published: Fri, May 31, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

BROOKFIELD -- A veteran township police officer is a suspect in a break-in of a mobile home last month.

Chief Daniel Faustino said Thursday that Lt. Jim Baker has been on administrative leave with pay since April 23.

Faustino said Baker, a 10-year member of the force, is the subject of an internal investigation by him and a criminal investigation by the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office. Baker has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

"I surmise he has resigned," Faustino said, noting Baker cleaned out his desk Wednesday.

Baker could not be reached.

The chief said Baker is a suspect in the April 23 break-in of the mobile home of a former friend of Baker's. Nothing was taken.

Faustino said police taking the report of the break-in called him to the home on Windgate, off state Route 7.

"We determined at that point that he was a suspect," Faustino said, adding Baker was off duty at the time.
