Man critical aftercrashing into pole

YOUNGSTOWN -- Donald DePaul, 35, of Billingsgate Avenue was in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center after crashing into a utility pole in his front yard Sunday evening.

Police had the car towed to be impounded for the accident investigation unit.

Suspicious fire reported

YOUNGSTOWN -- A suspicious fire at 2323 Trussit Ave. about 9:45 p.m. Sunday did about $15,000 damage to the vacant house, the fire department said. Value of the two-story wooden North Side house had been about $25,000.

Youngstown policesearch for shoplifter

YOUNGSTOWN -- Police possibly have a license plate number for a shoplifter who ran out of Rite Aid at 2800 Mahoning Ave. Sunday afternoon.

The suspect, a medium-built white man in his 30s, with black hair and a goatee, took eight computer ink fillers worth $1,600, six electric shavers worth $100 and four pregnancy tests worth $75, according to police reports.

Investigating report

AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that several young boys wrote the word "sex" on the leg and breasts of a 17-year-old North Beacon Drive girl with Down syndrome Saturday evening. The girl's mother told police that she noticed the words while the girl was bathing. The mother added that some of the boys, including one who is 7, told her the words were written on the girl while they were playing kickball in the yard of the North Beacon Drive home.

Beating reported

AUSTINTOWN -- A 20-year-old Rocky River man told police that he and two of his friends were beaten by seven or eight men during a fight Friday night on South Turner Road. The friends are 18-year-old Rocky River men. The 20-year-old said the fight began after he and his friends were asked to leave a party. They told police they did not want to pursue charges.

Injured in robbery

STRUTHERS -- A Morrison Street resident was slightly injured when two men with guns forced their way into his home about 8 p.m. Sunday and took $1,500 in cash, four handguns and an electronic game. The 22-year-old man told police he knew one of the robbers who struck him on the back of the head with a gun and made him open a safe to get the cash. The robbers left after using duct tape to bind the resident; a Struthers woman, 22, who was in the house when the robbery began; and a Struthers man, 23, who arrived during the robbery.

Lifeguard training

KINSMAN -- An American Red Cross lifeguard training session will be from 4 to 8 p.m. June 3-7 and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 8 at Girl Scout Camp Sugarbush, 6515 state Route 88.

Participants must reach age 15 by June 1, swim 500 yards nonstop, including 100 yards each of free-style, breaststroke and sidestroke and pay a $75 fee, which includes the cost of books and a CPR facemask.

Potential participants will be tested during the first hour, and those who don't meet the swimming requirements will be excused with a full refund. Those passing the course and receiving a lifeguard certification may apply to be summer lifeguards at the camp.
