NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Big inning keys Scrappers rally

Published: Tue, July 30, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

Mahoning Valley scored four runs in the fourth inning to top Williamsport.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Michael Rogers and Kevin Martin combined to pitch the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 7-5 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters in the New York-Penn League Monday.

Rogers (4-2) went the first six innings and left with a 6-4 lead. He gave up nine hits, four earned runs and struck out seven.

Martin allowed just one hit over three innings and was credited with his first save of the year.

The Scrappers (22-19) scored twice in the first inning but the Crosscutters (25-16) had a pair of two-run rallies to go in front 4-2 after three innings.

Big inning

A four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Jeff Haase, put Mahoning Valley in front to stay, 6-4.

Crosscutters starter Nick Gravelle entered the game with a 5-0 record and 2.14 ERA but was in trouble early.

Ben Francisco led off with a single and went to third on a single to right by Jonathan Van Every. Pat Osborn followed with an RBI single and one out later Haase walked to load the bases.

Van Every scored on a ground ball by Andy Baxter who has been hitting .345 over the last 10 games.

The Crosscutters, who lead McNamara Division, collected seven of their 10 hits in the second and third innings including a two-run homer by Brad Eldred.

The Scrappers, who took the rubber game of the three-game series, scored four runs on five hits in the fifth.

Miguel Peguero led off with a single and Francisco was safe on a bunt but Van Every grounded into a double play. Osborn singled in Peguero from third and Bill Peavey doubled to right to score Osborn, tying the score at 4.

Haase hit his seventh homer of the year, a 371-foot shot to left, to score Peavey. Haase has 23 RBIs.

Struck out side

Rogers responded with his best inning, striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth.

Williamsport scored a run in the seventh to close to 6-5 but the Scrappers answered with a run in the eighth.

With Baxter at first, pinch-hitter Shaun Larkin walked. Both were safe on a double steal play. A sacrifice fly by Mike Conroy plated Baxter with the final run.

Martin permitted just two baserunners over the final three innings.

Auburn (24-17) defeated Oneonta 8-5 Monday to keep its two-game lead over Mahoning Valley for first place in the Pinckney Division.

The Scrappers are off tonight and return home to play the Aberdeen Ironbirds in a three-game series, beginning Wednesday.
