CAMPBELL -- A late-night shootout at a subsidized housing project killed a Campbell man and wounded a Youngstown man.
Glenn Land, 19, was dead on arrival at St. Elizabeth Health Center at 12:27 a.m. today, the hospital said. William Fowler, 43, was in stable condition with a facial wound.
Police said this morning they are unsure if Fowler was involved in the argument that prompted the shooting or was hit by a stray bullet.
They said the argument may have been over a girl.
The shooting at the Michael J. Kirwan Homes on Jackson Street took place around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Police said they have a suspect, a 23-year-old Akron man. They will interview more witnesses today before filing charges, and would not say if he is in custody.
In response to an angry crowd at the scene, at least 30 officers from the Campbell, Youngstown, Struthers, Coitsville and Lowellville police departments and the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department were called to the housing project. A convertible with its top down and with a cracked windshield and garbage strewn inside was towed from the scene to the Campbell police station, where police were still interviewing witnesses early this morning.
Three people were arrested, one for disorderly conduct and assault and two on outstanding warrants.
The Kirwan Homes is a project of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority. The Mahoning County Coroner's Office is investigating.
