YOUNGSTOWN -- Police charged Lakeisha M. Ross, 28, of 812 Steel St. with child endangering and obstructing official business after neighbors found her 5-year-old daughter locked out of the house.
According to police reports, neighbors took the 5-year-old girl in after they found her crying on the front porch around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Neighbors told police the girl's mother routinely locks her out of the house early in the morning and won't let her back inside until after dark. Neighbors said that they feed the child and that she routinely urinates and defecates in neighborhood yards.
The girl confirmed the story, telling police the only thing she had eaten all day was what neighbors had given her.
When police and Children Services went to the girl's home to inform her mother that they had taken the child into custody and were going to place her in foster care, and that they were also going to place the woman's baby son in foster care, the woman agreed, then grabbed the baby and fled out a back door, police reports state.
Police found the woman hiding with her baby boy in an upstairs room of a home in the 1600 block of Butler Avenue. She got in through an unlocked door of that home without the owner's permission.
