NILES -- Minneapolis-based Best Buy Co. is making plans to open its second Mahoning Valley store.
The location is in the Eastwood Mall complex at 5791 Youngstown-Warren Road, the former site of an Ames Department Store.
Bob Piotter, spokesman for the Cafaro Co. of Youngstown, which operates the mall complex, said the consumer electronics and appliance retailer will occupy 35,000 square feet.
The new store will fill about one-third of the total space left vacant when Ames closed the store this spring. Piotter said Cafaro Co. expects to divide and lease the remaining space to three other retailers.
Best Buy had expressed interest in a space within the Eastwood complex some time ago, Piotter said, but the Ames space was the first open location that met its needs and specifications.
"Basically, we like to be where the people are," said Best Buy spokeswoman Jenny Bohuslavsky. "We look for traffic."
Best Buy also has a store in Boardman.
Renovation work will begin soon and a grand opening will be scheduled for early next spring.
The store will employ between 100 and 125 full- and part-time employees, she said.
Best Buy Co. Inc. is the parent company of Best Buy and six other retail store chains, all with commercial Web sites.
It operates more than 1,900 stores in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and about 480 of them are Best Buy stores.
Bohuslavsky said the chain already has locations in all the country's major markets, but it is continuing to grow aggressively, averaging 60 new store openings yearly.
Other store chains the company operates are Magnolia Hi-Fi, Media Play, On Cue, Sam Goody and Suncoast in the United States, and the Canadian Future Shop chain.
