Newton Falls council members fill vacant seat after resignation

NEWTON FALLS -- Catie Karl-Moran was selected by council Monday to fill a vacancy created when Harry Benetis, councilman at-large, resigned in April because of personal reasons.
She will finish Benetis' unexpired term.
It was announced that finance director Marcie Cunningham will serve as city manager during Robert C. Eberharat's absence because of illness.
Mayor Patrick D. Layshock and Councilman Ralph Gillespie discussed with council possibly increasing the rate of pay for anyone wishing to fill two vacant seats on the planning and zoning commission. They are considering raising the pay from $1 per meeting to $35.
"The increase in pay is necessary to get people to come aboard and represent the city," Gillespie said.
A motion to consider Paul King for one of the commission vacancies was tabled until a meeting can be set up with him to determine his availability.
Resident Bud Fetterolf announced he'll have a corrected petition signed and brought to the Trumbull County Board of Elections before Thursday.
Fetterolf is seeking a recall of Councilmen L. Bob Irwin and Tom McKee.
