CLASS B Propane, Academy remain at the top
The playoffs featuring four teams begin Wednesday.
STRUTHERS -- Youngstown Propane and Line Drive Academy will finish in the top two spots for the Class B baseball playoffs that begin Wednesday at Cene Park.
Both teams improved to 22-4 Sunday as Propane took a 7-0 forfeit from Becdir while Line Drive thumped Rondinelli, 9-1.
If Propane and Line Drive are tied after tonight's action, Propane will be the top seed for winning the season series, 2-1.
Line Drive 9, Rondinelli 1: A five-run fourth inning and a three-run fifth put the game away for Line Drive.
Sean Curry had a triple and a single while Ryan Vaughn had two singles to lead Line Drive.
Justin Byler and Jason Banasiewicz had two RBIs each for the winners.
Josh Susany pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the win, his third in four decisions.
For Rondinelli (8-18), Mike DeNiro had a triple and a single, and a drove in their only run.
Roth Brothers 8, Riordan's Sports 6: Roth's fifth-consecutive win ended Riordan's playoff hopes.
Matt Thompson had two hits, including a two-run home run for Roth while Jon Habuda had three hits including a double.
Kyle Irish had a double and two hits while winning pitcher Bob Dubovec (2-3) had a double. Dubovec had 10 strikeouts for Roth (10-16).
For Riordan's (12-14), Josh Pratt had three hits, including a three-run home run while Jeff Donston, Pat Oman and Mike DeCola each had two hits. DeCola's hits were a triple and a double.
Tonight, Riordan's needs to defeat Youngstown Express or have Propane beat Livi Steel to lock up fifth place and the final Connie Mack Tournament spot.
Livi Steel 5, Astro Falcons 4: Elliott Stevenson hit a single to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Livi the win.
Bob Miller (2-2) pitched four innings of two-hit shutout relief to get the win. Steve Burnich had three singles, and a key sacrifice bunt in the eighth while Stevenson and Shawn Petrarca had two hits.
Astro (16-10) is assured of finishing third and will play the second seed in the playoffs.
Chad Baker and Don Ehrenberg had doubles for Astros.
Youngstown Express 15, Lazart 5: Chuckie Horner, Scott Taylor and Casey Jirsa each had two hits for Express (14-12), which scored 10 times in the second inning.
Mike Kiline had four RBIs for the Express and Oliver had three.
For Lazart, (5-21) Travis Garrett had a triple, a single and three RBIs.
