LISBON -- The 24th Everett Hoppel Memorial wrestling tournament will be held at Beaver Local High Saturday with eight teams entered.
Preliminary rounds are scheduled for 10 a.m. and championship matches and consolation finals will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Beavers will be joined by West Branch (4-0), the regular season Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Division II champion; Lorain Southview; Geneva; South Range; Blackhawk; Salem, and East Liverpool.
The meet will bring together some 2001 state qualifiers.
Craig Bates (15-2), an EOWL Wrestler of the Week and a district qualifier last year, will be tested by a solid field of 215-pound wrestlers, including Howland Invitational champion Evan Crowgey of Salem and Beavers' sophomore Adam Hoppel (20-2), a returning state qualifier.
Transfer: Beaver Local will have transfer Jon Varner (16-4), a Division I state qualifier for East Liverpool, entered in the 130 class. Challenging him will be West Branch's Matt Close.
The Warriors' twin brothers, sophomores Levi (152) and Luke Bardo (160), and another brother, senior Josh (145) will contend.
Beaver Local's twin brothers, juniors Jordan (152, 11-1) and Jared (160) are defending Hoppel champs, but Jared broke his foot at Wednesday's practice and won't compete.
The Beavers also have four Hoppels wrestling, including Jared (130), a junior, and Grant, a freshman, and their cousins Luke (103) and Adam.
Salem has Jason Mullins, a Howland champ at 119, and Bill Borelli, 125, who will contend.
Senior Stu Sanor (15-2) of West Branch, a district qualifier, and teammates Anthony Hilliard, Drew Newhart, Wade Morrow, Jason Steer and Kyle Esterle will also compete, as well as the Beavers' Tyler Smith (10-8) and Ryan Holden (160, 15-8).
A all-day pass for the tournament will cost $10.
