Television parts plantto close a year early
OTTAWA, Ohio -- A plant that makes television picture tubes will close at the end of 2002 -- a year earlier than expected -- putting 1,200 people out of work in this small town 60 miles south of Toledo. Philips Display Components announced in April 2000 that it was moving nearly all production to Mexico but would keep production of its jumbo picture tubes in Ottawa; now those 300 jobs will go, too. The company opened its new, 2,000 worker plant in Mexico in December.

U.S. District Judge James Robertson's decision came after a hearing the mechanics union requested about whether the White House should have stepped into the dispute. Bush intervened last month at the request of federal mediators, blocking a strike by the 15,000 United mechanics that he said would have disrupted Christmas holiday travel.
