Port authority to help fund interchange

WELLSVILLE -- A project intended to improve highway access for an industrial park will receive funding from the Columbiana County Port Authority. The authority met Wednesday and approved about $1 million to help pay for the nearly $5 million effort to construct an interchange off state Route 7 that connects with Clark Avenue on the village's west side.
Tracy Drake, port authority director, said the agency also is asking the state to move ahead with the project as soon as possible. Drake said he's hopeful work on it can begin this spring and be completed in early 2003.
About half the port authority's share of the funding will come from its own budget, and the rest will come from state funds, Drake said.
The state, which is overseeing the interchange project, will provide the remaining $4 million for the undertaking through state and federal sources, Drake said.
Adding the interchanges to Route 7, which is a four-lane highway in the project area, will improve access to the port authority's industrial park, which lies off Clark Avenue, Drake said.
