Beaver OKs rezoning
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees voted to rezone a parcel of land on the corner of South Avenue and Miley Road from residential to commercial. The Mahoning County Planning Commission and the Beaver Township Zoning Commission both recommended that the change be approved. Property owner Robert Begala told the trustees at a hearing Tuesday that he plans to tear down the house on the property and build a retail food establishment on the 0.70 acre site.
COLUMBIANA -- Crestview Schools will begin accepting applications in March from pupils who wish to attend Crestview through open enrollment in the 2002-03 school year. Superintendent John Dilling said the board approved the first reading Wednesday of the district's open enrollment policy, and is expected to give the plan final approval at the February meeting. The district has not previously accepted open enrollment pupils. Dilling said applicants will be notified by July whether or not they are accepted.
Dilling said the board also approved a new part-time position, weight room manager, allowing for opening of the high school weight training facility to all Crestview pupils and residents. Adults will pay $5 monthly to cover the cost of the manager. All district pupils may use the weight facility at no cost.
Fire in Farrell home
FARRELL, Pa. -- Camille Smith and her 14-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son escaped an early morning fire that caused extensive damage to their rental home at 920 Hamilton Avenue. Fire Chief Joseph Santell said that the blaze started in the basement near the furnace and hot water heater but that the cause hasn't been determined.
The fire is listed as accidental, he said. Smith had no renter's insurance, and the owner of the house, Donald Pisegna of Farrell, had recently allowed the building insurance to lapse because he was in the process of selling the property, Santell said.
Chief will retire
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police Chief Barry Williams will retire Feb. 8, said Mayor Clifford Harriger. Williams is on vacation till then and Sgt. Thomas Strahler is serving as interim chief, Harriger said, adding that Strahler is the leading candidate to fill the post permanently.
Williams, 54, has been on the force for 32 years, serving as chief for the past16 years. Williams said he has been considering retirement for the past several years.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police are searching for a man who gave a fake $20 bill to a store clerk at the Pennzoil Pennzmart on Highland Avenue. Police said the man initially tried to buy a pack of cigarettes with a $20 bill that appeared to be too dark. The clerk rejected the bill and the man pulled out a second $20 bill and got change from the clerk, they said. After the man left, the clerk realized it didn't have the correct markings.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An inmate at the Youth Development Center in Shenango Township faces aggravated assault charges. Pennsylvania State Police said the 17-year-old boy punched one person in the nose and injured the shoulder of a second person at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday. Both are workers at the center and were treated at Jameson Hospital, one for a broken nose and stitches and the other for shoulder pain, police said.
Robber has a knife
SANDY LAKE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said a man armed with a knife took $192 from an attendant at McQuiston's gas station on U.S. Route 62 in Sandy Lake Township around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. He then ordered the attendant to get under a desk. When he left, he secured the door from the outside. A motorist stopping for gas moments later freed the attendant, police said.
Drug charges filed
POLAND -- Township police charged a 40-year-old Mercer, Pa., man with misdemeanor possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop earlier this week. The man was pulled over for a traffic violation Tuesday, and officers smelled marijuana in the car.
Police found suspected marijuana cigarettes, a wooden pipe with marijuana residue, a ceramic pipe with marijuana residue and small plastic bags with trace amounts of suspected marijuana inside the car.
