NILES -- A Canfield man charged with gambling after police raided a city house nearly a year ago has pleaded no contest.
Theodore J. Alexander, no age given in court records, of Pebble Beach Drive, and 16 others were charged with gambling and other offenses.
His case, the last to be resolved, was set for a trial in Niles Municipal Court next Wednesday. Nothing was scheduled for Tuesday when Alexander pleaded.
Judge Thomas W. Townley found Alexander guilty of an amended gambling charge, ordering him to pay $184 in fines and court costs. The charges were filed in August 2000, six months after police raided the house. Police were waiting for one of the defendants to recover from surgery.
It was the same raid that netted Joseph J. Angelo Jr. of Warren, Trumbull County commissioner. Angelo also was charged with gambling and pleaded no contest and was convicted in June of attempted gambling. He was sentenced to 10 hours of community service and ordered to pay $500 in fines and court costs.
