FUND-RAISER Heart association plans annual gala event

Two awards will be presented at the benefit.

BOARDMAN -- The American Heart Association will celebrate American Heart Month with a gala event Feb. 2 at Mr. Anthony's.

Theme of the celebration will be "An Affair of the Heart," and festivities will include dinner, dancing and a live and silent auction.

Recognition: Honors will be bestowed upon itizens who have made major contributions through their professional and public concern for residents of the Mahoning Valley.

The "Heart of the Community Award" will be presented posthumously to the late Ronald Stoops, high school football and baseball coach who died of a heart attack on the sidelines Oct. 7, 1988. A graduate of East High School, Stoops was named outstanding offensive and defensive player when he was a senior at Youngstown State University. He was an assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Cardinal Mooney High School and was the subject of a 15-minute documentary film, "A Natural, A Hero." He also was inducted posthumously to the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame in the softball category.

The "Cardiac Service Award" will be presented to Dr. Arthur V. Whittaker, who served as director of the cardiovascular laboratory at Forum Health Northside Medical Center for 24 years. He also has been associated with The Heart Center of Northeastern Ohio since 1969 and is an assistant professor of medicine at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and member of the Ohio state and Mahoning County medical societies.

A special guest will be 3-year-old Stephen Antal, 2002 Heart Child for the association's Mahoning/Northern Columbiana division. Stephen is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Antal of Austintown. He was born with multiple congenital heart defects and has undergone several surgeries, most recently on Sept. 5 at the Cleveland Clinic. He has recovered well and is now healthy and active.

In charge: Marie Scott is chairman of the event, assisted by Tony Bettile, vice chairman. Serving on the planning committee are Stacey Adger, Christine Begalla, Christina Berry, JoAnne Brashen, Dr. Michael Burley, Rebecca Cannon, Karen Cessna, Lori DiGiacomo, Kathy Dillon, Roseanne Duraney, Christine Leonelli, Ralph Lepley, Elizabeth Maiorana, Allison Medinger, Sue Perry, Paula Peterson, Patte Ulery and Lynn Zvara.

Sponsors of the event are Diagnostic Cardiology Associates, The Heart Center of Northeastern Ohio and The Heart Hospital at Forum Health, platinum level; Guidant, KeyBank, Metropolitan National Bank and Pepsi Cola, gold level; and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Coca Cola, National City Bank, Nemenz IGA, Nemenz Save-A-Lot and Schwebel's, silver level.
