State board president
Dr. Ronald L. Detwiler of Columbiana County is president of the Ohio State Board of Optometry. He also served as president in 1997. He was appointed to the board in 1993 and is serving his second five-year term on board.
Dr. Detwiler is a graduate of Kent State University and received a bachelor of visual science degree and doctor of optometry degree in 1975 from the Illinois College of Optometry.
He has maintained an active optometry practice in East Liverpool since his graduation from the Illinois College of Optometry. He is associated with John Conrad, O.D., and Dr. J.K. Juthra, an ophthalmologist in the East Liverpool area.
Dr. Detwiler has been active in the optometry profession through the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association, the Northeast Ohio Optometric Zone 4 group and the American Regulatory Boards of Optometry.
He has served on the Columbiana Board of Education, the board of directors of the Columbiana County Mental Health Association, and the executive board of the Columbiana County Boy Scouts of America.
He and his wife, Marilou, and children, Kristin, Jeff and Danny, live on a farm near Columbiana.
Elected historian
Youngstown Councilman Artis Gillam Sr., D-1st, recently was elected historian of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. He was elected during a trip to the National League of Cities meeting.
Gillam is serving his third year as a city councilman.
NBC-LEO was created in 1970 as a constituency group for the National League of Cities to represent the interests of black elected officials.
NBC-LEO's seminars, workshops and regional conferences provide opportunities for special focus and discussion on particular policies that matter to the black community and offer outreach programs intended to give back to that community.
