WARREN Motorcycle exhibit to go on without Harley

Published: Sat, January 5, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

Museum officials hope to reschedule the display.

WARREN -- Clark Gable's 1938 "Knuckle Head" Harley motorcycle isn't coming to the city after all.

That portion of the "Thunder of the Road" exhibit at National Packard Museum has been indefinitely postponed, officials say.

The exhibit opens Tuesday at the museum, 1899 Mahoning Ave., showcasing nearly 30 vintage motorcycles spanning 80 years and featuring several Harleys. It runs through April 20.

The museum is apologizing to the public for the postponement, saying it's because of unforeseen circumstances. Officials say they hope to reschedule that portion of the exhibit.

The display also will include memorabilia and a display of vintage clothing worn by riders, such as putties, riding goggles, a leather kidney belt and gloves.

Cycles in show: Other cycles that will be displayed as part of the exhibit include a police bike, cycles known as "Pan Head" and "Shovel Head," a military-issue bike and models including the 65 FLH.

Also displayed will be the Model J-11 Harley, also known as the "Silent Grey Fellow," introduced in 1915 for $310.

For non-Harley fans, the exhibit will include the 1931 Henderson KL, of which only a few hundred were built, and the 1909 Excelsior, featuring acetylene gas lighting, a pedal start and coaster brakes.

The Indian Prince and Scout, the Ariel Square Four and the Zundapp Super Scooter also will be on display.

Information: The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children 7-12.
