Tressel to speak
BOARDMAN -- Jim Tressel, head coach of Ohio State University's football team, will speak at the Industrial Information Institute for Education's annual meeting Feb. 13 at Mr. Anthony's Banquet Center. Tressel was head football coach at Youngstown State University for 15 years before going to OSU last year. At YSU, his teams won four Division I-AA national championships.
The meeting begins with a hospitality hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30. The cost is $50 per person. Call (330) 742-2314 for more information.
Foundation gives grant
AKRON -- The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has given $2.5 million to help develop the area around the University of Akron. The grant will be administered by UA and University Park Alliance, which was created to improve residential areas adjacent to the campus.
"This donation will serve as seed money, as a catalyst that will spur activity and will draw attention to and additional investment in this ambitious and worthwhile undertaking," UA President Luis M. Proenza said.
The Knight Foundation was started 51 years ago in Akron.
Bethany Collegenames new president
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Dr. Patricia Lewis Poteat, former president of Athens College in Athens, Greece, has been named president of Bethany College. Poteat, currently a visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will take the leadership position July 1, replacing Dr. D. Duane Cummins. Bethany College is a private school with about 800 students.
