EAST LIVERPOOL -- City police and West Virginia firefighters were to continue searching the Ohio River today for an East Liverpool woman. Police found her walker Tuesday at the edge of the Broadway Wharf boat ramp.
East Liverpool Police Captain Norm Curtis said a taxi driver reported Vera M. Conaway, 73, of Fawcett Apartments missing at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, about an hour after dropping her off there. Curtis said volunteer firefighters from Chester and Newell, W.Va., searched the river by boat until noon Tuesday, calling off the search because of frigid temperatures. The river is in West Virginia's jurisdiction, Curtis noted.
Curtis said the driver told police Conaway asked to be dropped off at the Broadway Wharf. The taxi driver told police Conaway said she was going to the wharf because "she wanted to clear her thoughts," and asked to be picked up an hour later. The woman was gone when the taxi driver returned.
Curtis said the wharf is a popular spot for people to enjoy the view of the river or to feed the ducks.
He said Conaway lives alone and that family members have met with police.
