Protest of executionplanned at church

YOUNGSTOWN -- An event has been scheduled for Tuesday evening to protest the execution of John W. Byrd Jr., according to a group that opposes the death penalty.

Ohioans to Stop Executions has announced that the video "Death No More" will be shown at 7 p.m. at St. Brendan's Parish, 2800 Oakwood Ave., followed by a discussion and prayers for victims and for an end to the death penalty.

It will be one of many events around the state to protest Byrd's execution for the 1983 murder of Monte Tewksbury, a suburban Cincinnati convenience store employee stabbed during a robbery.

Byrd, 38, is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 10 a.m. Tuesday. See story on B4.
