Singer's dressing roomburglarized; charge filed

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Someone got past Janet Jackson's velvet rope.

While the pop diva was entertaining fans Wednesday night at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a 19-year-old man was allegedly breaking into her dressing room, police said.

Mario Backman of Manhattan was charged with third-degree burglary after the singer's managers found him inside Jackson's dressing room, said Detective Sgt. John Giambrone, a Nassau County police spokesman. Backman was released without bail and ordered to return to court Monday.

Lennon-McCartneymeeting place saved

LIVERPOOL, England -- The wooden church stage where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met has been saved from demolition, city officials said Thursday.

The stage in St. Peter's Church in the Woolton area of Liverpool, where McCartney watched Lennon perform with his group The Quarrymen in July 1957, was to have been ripped up by building contractors this week to make way for renovations.

But Liverpool City Council stepped in at the 11th hour to save the stage, which will now be gingerly dismantled piece by piece and placed in storage.

Steven Weber to joincast of 'Producers'

NEW YORK -- It's official. After several days of speculation, it has been confirmed that Steven Weber will replace Matthew Broderick as the hapless Leo Bloom in "The Producers."

Weber and English actor Henry Goodman, who is taking over for Nathan Lane, will join the smash Mel Brooks musical March 19, spokesman John Barlow said Thursday. Lane and Broderick leave "The Producers" on March 17 after nearly a year's run on Broadway.

The 40-year-old Weber is best known for his role as Brian Hackett in the television series "Wings," which ran on NBC from 1990 until 1997.

"The Producers," based on Brooks' film comedy, won 12 Tony Awards last June, including the prize for best musical.
