Wasko is named to election panel



AUSTINTOWN -- A former clerk to the Mahoning County commissioners has been named to the board of elections by the executive committee of the county's Democratic Party.
Robert J. Wasko was elected Saturday by a secret-ballot vote of 16-1-1. The other two votes went to Kathleen Dillon, who Wasko will replace on the board, and precinct committeewoman Patricia Bowser.
Dillon has served on the board four years.
Party Chairman David Ditzler said support for Wasko was, "pretty much unanimous."
Eighteen of the executive committee's 20 members attended the vote, which was held at the Austintown Township building.
Wasko, of Youngstown, will serve a four-year term, which pays $14,358 annually plus benefits.
He served as clerk to the commissioners for more than five years and unsuccessfully ran for a state House seat in 1992.
Wasko operates Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell and is corporate vice president of Carlson Wagonlit Travel, which has three local offices.
