IN THE KITCHEN

Published: Sun, February 3, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

IN THE KITCHEN

Never pour grease down the drain. The grease will cool and create a buildup that will act as a magnet for food particles. Run plenty of water down the drain while you are using the garbage disposal to grind up food. Using too little water can cause food to build up along the sides of the pipe. Never empty coffee grounds into the sink. Pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain once a week to help melt away any grease that might have collected.

IN THE BATHROOM

Clean pop-up stoppers often. Hair tends to wind around stoppers and cause clogs. Use hair traps in tubs and showers to keep hair from washing down the drain.

GENERAL TIPS

If you have your own septic tank, have a professional inspect it every two to three years. Also, do not pour acidic chemicals into a septic tank. Acids destroy the bacteria needed to break down wastes.
